Transcribe Google Meet

Recording in Google Meet is not available on every account. A free Gmail account has no record button. The Murmel note taker does not depend on that: it joins via the link. If you do have a recording, you simply upload it.

Can your account record?

According to Google's own help page on recording (checked on 22 Oct 2026) you can record in Meet with these Google Workspace editions: Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Essentials, Enterprise Essentials, Education Plus (staff licence), Teaching and Learning Upgrade and Workspace Individual. Google One subscribers with 2 TB of storage or more can also record. In an organisation, the Workspace admin must also have enabled recording.

If your account is not on that list, for example a free Gmail account or Business Starter, route 1 is the only way without extra software.

Route 1: the Murmel note taker

  1. Copy the Meet linkThe link looks like https://meet.google.com/abc-defg-hij. You find it in the calendar invitation or in Meet under Meeting details.
  2. Paste the link into the Meetings tabOpen the Murmel Studio, go to Vergaderingen (Meetings), paste the link under Vergaderlink and choose Nu deelnemen (join now), or Later inplannen (schedule) with a start time.
  3. Admit "Murmel.nl transcriptie"The note taker asks to join. The host sees a prompt and clicks Admit. Everyone then sees the note taker in the participant list.
  4. Read the transcript in the StudioAfterwards you get an email. The transcript is in your Studio with speakers. Rename the speakers and export to Word, PDF, TXT or another format.

More on what the note taker does and does not do is on the note taker for Teams and Google Meet page.

Route 2: the recording from Google Drive

  1. Start the recording in MeetAt the bottom right, click Meeting tools, then Recording and Start recording. Confirm in the pop-up. Stopping works through the same menu. The recording also stops by itself when everyone has left.
  2. Wait for the emailGoogle processes the recording and emails a link to the organiser and to whoever started it. The link is also added to the calendar event.
  3. Download the file from DriveThe recording is in the organiser's Google Drive, in the Google Meet folder, with a subfolder per meeting. Older recordings were in the Meet Recordings folder; since July 2026 Google renames it to Legacy Meet Recordings. Right-click the file and choose Download.
  4. Upload to MurmelDrag the video file onto Spraak naar tekst in the Studio. You can upload several recordings at once. An hour of conversation is usually ready in under a minute.

Common problems

  • No Recording option in Meeting tools. Your account is not on the list above, the admin has disabled recording, or you are not the host. Use the note taker instead.
  • The note taker is not admitted. Only the host (or a co-host) can admit. In meetings inside an organisation the admin can block outside participants; check with IT.
  • Cannot find the recording. Look in the organiser's Drive, not your own. Processing can take a while; the email only arrives once the recording is ready.
  • File too large. Basic takes up to 1 GB per file, higher plans up to 2 GB. You can also convert long videos to audio only first, for example m4a.
  • Names and jargon wrong. Add them to your vocabulary before uploading or starting the note taker. Explained in custom vocabulary.

Frequently asked questions

Does the note taker work with a free Gmail account?

Yes. The note taker only needs the link. The organiser's account type does not matter, as long as someone admits the note taker.

Can I transcribe a call in English or half English?

Yes. Murmel is built for Dutch, with English as a second language. A call that mixes both works too. Other languages are not supported.

Who can see my transcript?

Only you, in your own Studio. Audio and text are processed and stored in the Netherlands, and you choose how long they are kept. See privacy.

What does an hour of Meet cost?

With prepaid credits €1.45 incl. VAT. With Basic (€10.89 per month incl. VAT) you get 12 hours per month. See pricing.

Try it with your own recording?

Creating an account takes a minute. Pay with iDEAL or card.
